- LISTENING TRANSCRIPT: PART I 1. Listen to a radio talk about Canada. Fill each of the gaps with no more than two words. You will listen TWICE. Travelling to Canada, tourists will find many interesting things. With a population of people from all over the world, the flavours from every continent can be found everywhere in Canada. Most of Canada’s large cities have a Chinatown and some, such as Toronto, have large communities of individuals from countries such as Italy. Restaurants serving regional menus from Thailand, Australia, China, Japan, Italy, France, India and Ukraine are extremely popular. Most places are very reasonably priced and serve extremely good quality food. Fast food restaurants and drive-thru’s are a common sight in Canada. Many international-brand restaurants can be found in Canada along with Canadian equivalents. Shopping in Canada is very good, especially in and around the major cities. There are a lot of huge shopping malls, all with a wide variety of stores ranging from small specialist shops to large department stores. The types of souvenirs that are typically Canadian, however, include Native Canadian jewellery and crafts, and of course maple syrup. 2. Listen to a talk between Tom and Lena about having a native-like accent. Decide if the statements are Tom: How’re things? Lena: I’m busy practising my English pronunciation. Tom: Sounds good! It’s essential for communication. Lena: Actually, it’s difficult. I also try to immitate the British accent but it seems impossible. Tom: You don’t have to! Lena: Why not? Don’t you think it would be best if you speak a language and have the exact accent? Tom: It’s ideal, but not a must. Lena: Why not? Tom: You see, the purpose is to communicate. If you can communicate your ideas well, and that is. If you notice, the number of native speakers is just small compared to non-native speakers. Lena: Right. Tom: And you see, people from Singapore and Malaysia do not have American or British accent but they use perfect English at work. Lena: You are right. So I don’t think I will spend more time imitating British accent as I did recently Tom: Instead you should spend a lot of time practising the four skills and enrich your vocabulary.
